A four-panel comic strip

PezLife

With the Tiltons — an ordinary family of flip-tops with one small problem: tilt your head back for any reason — a laugh, a nod, a sneeze — and a candy comes out.

Meet the family

The Tiltons

Steve Tilton

Dad

Believes every joke is a dad joke if you tilt it right. Has never once read the refill instructions, and sees no reason to start.

Donna Tilton

Mom

Peppermint, like the 1927 originals, right down to the swirl in her bun. Keeps the family stocked, upright, and mostly closed at the dinner table.

Eddie Tilton

Big brother · 10

Fastest flip in the fourth grade. Wears number 12 because that is what a pack holds, and he goes through one a day.

Cherry Tilton

Little sister · 6

Laughs at everything — which, in this family, is expensive. Starting school this year. The school has been warned.

1. The front door. Cherry wears a backpack nearly as big as she is. Donna: “Big day, Cherry! Remember: raise your hand if you know the answer.”

2. Cherry, flatly: “Mom. We don’t have hands.” Donna, after a pause: “…Then do what comes naturally.”

3. The classroom. The board reads 2 + 2 = ? The teacher, off-panel: “Who knows the answer?” ME! ME! ME! Three heads flip back and candy flies across the room; one bonks off the chalkboard. The teacher: “One at a time, pl—”

4. That evening. Cherry droops and rattles. Cherry: “I knew so many answers.” Donna, a refill roll at the ready: “She’s completely empty.” Steve, beaming: “That’s my girl.”

1. The living room. Steve, beside a camera on a tripod: “Family photo! And this year… nobody laughs.”

2. “Three… two…” All four stand rigid and sweating. Eddie, whispering: “psst… Dad’s mustache is crooked.”

3. HA! HA! HA! Everyone cracks up, all four heads flip back, and candy flies everywhere as the camera goes CLICK.

4. The hallway: framed family photos from ’23, ’24, ’25 and ’26, every one of them four flipped-back heads and flying candy. Donna: “Twelve years of family photos. Not one face.” Steve: “Great necks, though.”

Coming up

The Tiltons are just getting started

Eddie wants to know when his growth spurt is coming. Grandpa Reg — a “regular” from 1949, no head to speak of and no feet either — is coming to stay. And somebody has to explain to Cherry why you never, ever sneeze in the library.
